You need to measure something on-line, but don't know if it is possible or how to do it

If you do not work with measurement systems regularly, it can be a tedious and complicated task to find the best solution. You probably have other things to do where your own expertise is better used.

It is likely that your existing gauge is 10 years old or more. Then, it is most probable that a new gauge can do a much better job, have new features, better performance, maybe safer and be more economical. Technology develops quickly within the process industry and you may have to adopt to a new way of thinking, but also give you benefits that were not possible before. Just replacing a system without a proper market study can be risky and be a hindrance to develop your company in the future. You have to do your homework at this stage. If you don't it is likely that you will regret it later.

You have some measurement systems but want to utilize the measurement data in a better way

Measurement data is important for many reasons. The most obvious is to certify that an object is satisfying the tolerances and that is probably still why most measurement and inspection systems are installed. But quality assurance solve a very small part of the problem. It merely move the point of where the problem is detected, from the customer to your own manufacturing and always results in a higher rejection rate than before, making the inspection expensive. You have fixed the symptom, but not the cause.

So what to do?

What is necessary is to find the root causes for the quality problems and fix them. To do this you have to collect data (maybe a lot of data) and match data from various parts of the line to the quality problems you detect. This will make it possible to:

Eliminate/improve processes with low production capability which will increase quality, productivity and yield
Do preventive maintenance/replacements which will reduce un-planned stops
Potentially improve the product performance to give better guarantees and open up new markets
Get a more predictable production which will reduce stress and improve personal safety and comfort

Quality is not expensive. Quality is a requirement to reduce costs and become more profitable.
